This started out as a painting of a hippy I found in Wellfleet. I thought, Jesus, does he look mad.. a real SDS fire-eater! I wondered where his head would be at now. Probably pushed to the right, feeling vulnerable, ambivalent, anxious about lobbing cruise missles, but thinking, okay, if it wipes out the nutcase planning the move on the nuclear power plant nearby. But not feeling good about it, not good at all.

I had a painting of a flabby naked old guy so I turned him into the emperor who wore no clothes, indicating, really, vulnerability. So then I made everyone vulnerable and naked, even Mr. Peabody.

While foreign terrorists started the ball rolling, I have to say, I can't believe the anthrax hysteria which is sweeping the nation. My personal theory is that the anthrax assault is by a homegrown nutcase, and while death is always tragic on any scale, this media-fueled hysteria just plays into the hands of who ever is behind all this. It also plays into the hands of the foreign terrorists, who must be laughing at the psychological havoc being wreaked.

Only a couple of people have died from anthrax, compared to the 5000 or so in New York attack. This painting is about the hysteria sweeping our nation. By the way, don't give in to the terror. Shake it off the way you do when you hear about statistics of traffic fatalities or accidents in the home. We're all going to die someday - but not today, baby!

The text says, 'After Ed Imagined He Smelled Anthrax On His Fingers, Jesus Told Him To Get A Grip!' Jesus says,"Don't panic, it's just garlic!" Outside the window you see threatening death planes, indicating the real foreign danger. The eight balls are meant to signify uncertainty about the future. The more than likely illegible Arabic spells Koran quotes, 8:8 "For he has decreed that the truth shall prevail, and the falsehood shall vanish, in spite of the evil-doers." and part of 8:25 "Beware of a retribution that may not be limited to the evil-doers among you. You should know that GOD's retribution is severe."

I found these quotes quite interesting, especially the translation of 'evil-doers'. Bush has used evil-doers quite extensively, and I've always thought it was kind of hokey, like something out of a comic book. But after reading this, I'm wondering if the use of the term was considered for Arabic translation and consumption - if it carries associations with Koran texts.
